What is Turkish Compulsory Traffic Insurance?
Turkish Compulsory Traffic Insurance (Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası) is the mandatory third-party motor liability insurance required for all vehicles on Turkish roads. It covers damage or injury caused to third parties. Every foreign-plated vehicle entering Turkey must have valid Turkish MTPL or an accepted Green Card.
What does MTPL stand for?
MTPL stands for Motor Third Party Liability insurance. In Turkey it is called Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası. It is the minimum legal insurance requirement for all vehicles on Turkish roads.
Who regulates Turkish insurance?
Turkish insurance is regulated by SEDDK — Sigortacılık ve Özel Emeklilik Düzenleme ve Denetleme Kurumu (Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Agency). Ikamet Sigorta is a fully licensed broker under SEDDK regulation.
Can I buy Turkish insurance if I am already in Turkey?
Yes. If your policy has expired or you arrived without cover, contact us on WhatsApp immediately. We can issue a policy while you are in Turkey. Do not drive without valid insurance as fines are heavy and your vehicle can be impounded.
What is the minimum duration I can buy?
The minimum policy duration is 1 month. We offer 1, 3, 6, and 12-month policies. If you are visiting briefly, a 1-month policy is the most cost-effective option.
Can I get a refund if I leave Turkey early?
No. Turkish MTPL policies are explicitly non-cancellable and non-refundable once issued — this is stated on the policy document itself and is required by Turkish insurance regulations. The policy also cannot be transferred to another vehicle. We recommend choosing a duration that matches your planned stay.
What if SEDDK increases the minimum coverage limits during my policy?
Your policy automatically upgrades to the new minimum limits at no extra charge, from the date the new limits take effect. This is a legal requirement written into every Turkish MTPL policy — you never need to do anything or pay anything extra if SEDDK raises the limits while you are covered.
Does Turkish MTPL include roadside assistance?
Car policies include Quick Yardım roadside assistance for accident-related breakdowns: towing to the nearest garage (up to 4,500 TL) and winch rescue (up to 7,500 TL). The assistance line is 0850 755 1 755. Important: this covers accidents only — breakdowns, flat tyres, and running out of fuel are not covered by the MTPL assistance. Motorcycle and commercial vehicle policies do not include roadside assistance.
What documents do I need to make a claim?
For property damage: kaza tespit tutanağı (accident report), vehicle registration copies, driver licence copies, alcohol test reports, and your bank details. For injury or death claims, additional documents are required including certified police reports, medical board reports, and income evidence. Your policy PDF contains the full claims requirements. Contact us on WhatsApp after an accident and we will guide you through the process.
How do I receive my policy document?
Your policy PDF is sent directly to the WhatsApp number you provide during checkout. You also receive an email confirmation. Keep the PDF on your phone — border officers may ask to see it.
What if I do not receive my policy within 2 hours?
If your policy is not issued within 2 hours during business hours (09:00–18:00 Turkey time), you are entitled to a full refund. Contact us immediately on WhatsApp with your order reference number.
Is the policy valid for the entire duration from the start date?
Yes. Your policy is valid from the start date you specify for the full duration purchased. You can specify a future start date if you are buying in advance of your trip.
Do I need to carry a printed copy of the policy?
Turkish border officers and police accept digital copies on your phone screen. However, we recommend also carrying a printed copy as a backup, especially at land border crossings where connectivity can be unreliable.
What happens if I have an accident in Turkey?
The process depends on whether anyone is injured. For a property-damage-only accident: both drivers complete and sign the official Maddi Hasarlı Trafik Kazası Tespit Tutanağı (Accident Report Form). Each keeps a copy and submits it to their insurer — police attendance is not required. If anyone is injured, fault is disputed, or one driver refuses to cooperate: call the police immediately on 155. Photograph everything before moving vehicles. Your TRAMER document number (on your policy PDF) is required on the form.
Do I have to call the police after every accident in Turkey?
No. For property-damage-only accidents with two cooperating drivers, you fill in the mutual Accident Report Form (Maddi Hasarlı Trafik Kazası Tespit Tutanağı) without police. Police (155) are required only if: someone is injured, one driver refuses to cooperate, a driver is uninsured, or the damage is severe. For injury accidents, call 112 (ambulance) and 155 (police) immediately.
What is the kaza tespit tutanağı?
The kaza tespit tutanağı (Maddi Hasarlı Trafik Kazası Tespit Tutanağı) is Turkey's official property-damage accident report form. Both drivers complete it at the scene — recording vehicle details, insurance policy numbers, TRAMER numbers, fault indicators, and a sketch of the collision. Both sign both copies; each driver keeps one and submits it to their insurer. The form is in Turkish. As a foreign driver, your TRAMER number and policy number from your PDF are the key details you need to fill in your side.
What is my TRAMER number and where do I find it?
TRAMER (Trafik Sigortaları Bilgi Merkezi) is Turkey's national motor insurance database. Your TRAMER Belge No is printed on your Turkish MTPL policy PDF. It is the number that links your policy to your vehicle plate in the national database. Traffic police can verify your insurance using this number, and it is required if you need to fill in an accident report form. It will look like a long numeric code on your policy document.
What information do I need to exchange at an accident in Turkey?
Exchange the following with the other driver: full name, phone number, vehicle plate, insurance company name, policy number, and TRAMER document number. If the other driver has a Green Card (not Turkish MTPL), also note their Green Card number, issuing country, and passport number — these are required on the accident form. Photograph both vehicles, the scene, the other driver's licence, and their insurance document.
What if the other driver has a Green Card instead of Turkish MTPL?
The accident report form has a dedicated Green Card section (section 8). You will need to record their Green Card number (Yeşil Kart No), their country (Ülke), and their passport number. Green Card holders may take longer to process claims as these go through their home country insurer rather than the Turkish system. This is one reason many drivers prefer Turkish MTPL — claims are handled directly in Turkey through TRAMER.
Do I need to stay at the accident scene in Turkey?
You do not have to wait at the exact spot. The official accident form notes that you can photograph the vehicles, move them to avoid blocking traffic, and fill in the report form elsewhere. However, do not leave the scene entirely until you have exchanged details and both signed the form. For injury accidents, stay at the scene and wait for the police (155) and ambulance (112).
Can I get insurance for a motorcycle in Turkey?
Yes. We cover motorcycles with foreign plates entering Turkey. Motorcycle MTPL prices are lower — 1 month from €26. See our motorcycle insurance page for full details.
Do trucks and campervans need separate insurance?
Yes. Trucks, campervans, and motorhomes require Turkish MTPL and are priced differently from cars. See our campervan and truck insurance page for specific pricing starting from €117 per month.
How far in advance can I buy my Turkish insurance policy?
You can purchase up to 30 days in advance and specify your desired start date. This is ideal if you are planning a road trip to Turkey and want everything organised before departure.
Is WhatsApp required to receive my policy?
WhatsApp is our primary delivery method as it is the fastest and most reliable way to send your PDF policy. If you do not use WhatsApp, your policy is also sent to your email address. Contact us if you need an alternative delivery method.
What currency can I pay in?
You can pay in EUR by card (Visa or Mastercard via Stripe) or by bank transfer. Prices are shown in both EUR and Turkish Lira for your reference. Crypto payment in USDT is coming soon.
Is my personal data safe?
Yes. We are fully compliant with GDPR and Turkish KVKK data protection regulations. Your personal data and vehicle documents are stored securely and used only for policy issuance. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Can I get insurance for a vehicle not registered in my name?
Yes. Turkish MTPL is issued for the vehicle regardless of who is driving. Provide the vehicle registration details during checkout. Contact us on WhatsApp if you have any questions about your specific situation.
Do I need insurance for a trailer being towed into Turkey?
Trailers being towed by a foreign-plated vehicle may require separate Turkish MTPL. This depends on the trailer type and weight. Contact us on WhatsApp with your trailer details and we will advise you.
How do renewal reminders work?
We automatically send you WhatsApp reminders 14 days, 7 days, and 1 day before your policy expires. The reminder includes a direct link to renew in minutes without re-entering your details. You can opt out of reminders at any time.
