Georgian car insurance does not cover Turkey. Georgia is not a member of the Green Card system, which means Georgian KASKO or MTPL policies have no legal standing in Turkey. Every Georgian-plated vehicle entering Turkey must carry valid Turkish Compulsory Traffic Insurance (Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası / MTPL).
Georgia and the Green Card system
The Green Card (officially the International Motor Insurance Certificate) is a standardised insurance document accepted across 48 member countries. It allows drivers to use their home-country insurance when travelling in participating states.
Georgia is not a member of the Green Card system. This means Georgian insurance companies cannot issue a Green Card, and Turkish authorities do not recognise Georgian insurance policies as valid cover on Turkish roads.
This is not a new rule or a temporary measure — Georgia has never been part of the Green Card system. Every Georgian driver who has ever driven in Turkey has been required to purchase separate Turkish MTPL insurance. It applies to all vehicle types: cars, motorcycles, campervans, pickup trucks, and minibuses.
What Georgian drivers need for Turkey
To drive legally in Turkey with Georgian plates, you need:
- Valid Turkish MTPL insurance — mandatory, covers third-party liability in Turkey
- Your Georgian driving licence — valid in Turkey for up to 6 months
- Your vehicle registration document (saregistracio mowmoba)
- Your passport
- Temporary vehicle import permit — issued at the border by Turkish customs
You do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) if your Georgian licence has Latin-script information on it. However, carrying an IDP is recommended for longer stays.
The temporary vehicle import permit allows your Georgian-plated car to stay in Turkey for up to 6 months. Attempting to extend beyond 6 months without re-exporting and re-importing the vehicle is a violation of Turkish customs law.
Prices for Georgian vehicles
Turkish MTPL prices for foreign-plated vehicles are regulated by SEDDK and are standardised across all licensed brokers. The price depends on vehicle type and duration:
- Car: 1 month €26 · 3 months €39 · 6 months €130 · 12 months €221
- Motorcycle: 1 month €26 · 3 months €26 · 6 months €39 · 12 months €39
- Campervan / Pickup: 1 month €117 · 3 months €143 · 6 months €195 · 12 months €390
- Minibus (10–17 seats): from €150/month
Prices are quoted in EUR. You pay in EUR or the TL equivalent. There are no hidden fees — the prices shown include all taxes and broker commission.
Border crossings from Georgia to Turkey
There are three land border crossings between Georgia and Turkey:
- Sarpi / Sarp — the busiest crossing, on the Black Sea coast near Batumi and Hopa. Open 24 hours. The main crossing for most Georgian drivers.
- Aktaş / Aktas (Kartsakhi) — in the south of Georgia near Ninotsminda. A quieter alternative to Sarpi, often faster in summer peak season.
- Türkgözü / Vale — near Akhaltsikhe. Less used; primarily for freight but open to private vehicles.
All three crossings have insurance kiosks, but queues can be long in summer — especially at Sarpi on Friday evenings and weekend mornings. Buying insurance online before you travel means you skip the insurance queue entirely.
